There is no single correct borewell depth for all of Chennai. Depth depends on the property, local rock layers, intended use, nearby borewells, seasonal conditions and the quality target. A responsible contractor discusses uncertainty instead of promising the same depth for every street.

Why locality matters
Chennai has varied soil, rock and built-up environments. The coastal belt along OMR and Sholinganallur sits on different geology from inland areas like Tambaram, Porur or Poonamallee. Older settled areas like Mylapore, Adyar and T Nagar may have different groundwater profiles compared to rapidly developing suburbs like Medavakkam, Vandalur or Kelambakkam.
In some localities, water-bearing layers are found at relatively shallow depths — 150 to 300 feet. In others, especially where hard rock dominates, drilling may need to go deeper — 600 to 1000 feet or more — to reach a reliable aquifer. The only way to know what lies beneath your specific plot is to drill and observe the formations encountered.
Geology and rock formations
Chennai subsurface typically includes layers of clay, sand, weathered rock and hard crystalline rock. The water-bearing zones are usually found in fractures or joints in the rock, or in sandy layers between clay deposits. The depth at which these zones appear varies not just by locality but sometimes from one plot to the next.
A drilling rig cuts through these layers and the operator monitors the cuttings to identify where water is entering the bore. This real-time observation is what determines the final depth — not a predetermined number. This is why any average is only a rough indicator.
Plan around use
A small home, apartment block and workshop have different daily demand. Pump sizing and storage should be considered with drilling. A family of four using water for domestic purposes has very different needs from a 50-unit apartment complex or a restaurant. The intended use affects how much yield is acceptable, which in turn affects how deep you should drill.
If you only need supplementary water for gardening and washing, a shallower bore may be sufficient. For full domestic dependence or commercial use, a deeper bore with a higher-capacity pump is usually necessary. Seasonal variation and recharge
Even after drilling to the right depth, yield can vary with the seasons. During the monsoon, water levels rise and yield improves. In the dry months, yield may drop. This is normal and does not necessarily mean the borewell has failed. However, if yield does not recover after the monsoon, there may be a problem with the borewell slots, the aquifer or local groundwater depletion.

Access constraints
Equipment access can also limit the best method for a small home or tight lane. In narrow streets where a standard rig cannot enter, hand bore drilling may be an alternative, though it is typically limited to shallower depths.
